Could it also be that they summoned things BESIDES aeons? Creatures made of pyreflies but not connected to the faith, the fiends. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to think that summoners, who can send the dead to the farplane, could summon fiends to fight for them?
Aeons are, in a sense, fiends. They are made of pyreflies. The fayth aren’t sent, if I remember correctly. They just are in a “holy stasis”, if you will. Their souls being brought out and formed of pyreflies to fight for the summoner.
A fiend is all of that, except for them being an unsent. Angry, vengeful, resentful of the living people. For someone who can use pyreflies to walk on water, forcing them to form a minor moster seems like it would be fairly easy.
